Lesson Plan LP-05 — FFS: Scenario-Based Training Phase — Facilitation & TEM

Type: Full Flight Simulator (instructional practice)
Duration: 4.0 hours block (incl. brief/debrief)

Objectives

  1. Brief and run a Scenario-based training phase with deliberate threats aligned to 2–4 competencies (competencies = aim; scenario = vehicle) — Doc 9995 Part I, 7.6 paraphrased.
  2. Facilitate in-session: unlike Evaluation, intervene or interrupt where necessary to enable development; use the intervention ladder.
  3. Integrate, train, and evaluate CRM/TEM in the operational (FSTD) environment — not only “mention CRM in the debrief” (SD29 v9.1 §4.5 / §8 paraphrased).
  4. Adapt emphasis toward weaker competencies identified in a prior Evaluation phase when evidence is available.
  5. Debrief TEM and decision-making with facilitation that encourages self-analysis; highlight good performance as well as errors.
  6. Show tailor-up or tailor-down based on live evidence within approved objectives.

Competency focus (pilots under training)

Problem Solving & Decision Making · Situation Awareness · Communication · Leadership & Teamwork · TEM

TRI candidate focus: TEM craft · Facilitation · Leadership & Teamwork · Flight Path instructional SA

Timing (example)

Mins Phase Content Instructor notes
0–35 Brief Declare Scenario-based training phase; story; competencies/CRM aims; must-achieve items; TRI may intervene to develop Preserve useful surprise if planned; contrast with Evaluation rules
35–140 Scenario-based training phase Line-oriented story; one primary + optional secondary threat; TEM/CRM integrated with technical task Modulate pressure; intervene to enable learning; protect objectives
140–155 Cool-down / admin in box Stable state for shutdown training if required Avoid new major faults
155–240 Debrief Self-assessment → themes → standard → tailor outcome Tutor scores facilitation ratio

Success look-like

Threats feel fair and type-realistic; instructor intervention serves development (7.6); CRM/TEM taught and assessed in the box, not only named afterwards; debrief yields TEM narrative and competency-tagged next training; no “gotcha” design.
